Part 3 - Example speech: How you interact with other people (causation)

I had an interesting week this week. On Monday, Sam helped me pass my Spanish test. On Tuesday, Brian motivated me to go back to the gym. One Wednesday, my brother came to visit me, but because he doesn’t have a car, he asked me to pick him up from the airport. On Thursday, my car broke down, but Mark allowed me to borrow his car. On Friday, my daughter persuaded me to let her go to her friend’s party. And on Saturday, my boss forced me to work overtime. It was an interesting week.

Part 4 - Example summary

His name is Steven. He was fired from his job last year. There was a really important meeting he missed. He really should have attended it. If he hadn’t missed that important meeting, he wouldn’t have been fired. Now, he’s living with his parents. His parents left his room as it was after he left just in case he came back. He asked my parents if he could stay with them and they said it was OK as long as he helped out with the housework. Every week, his parents get him to mow the lawn and clean the toilet. But he doesn’t mind; he likes helping out. He’s going to live with his parents for a while because by staying with them he can save a lot of money. He hasn’t spent much time with his family over the last few years, so this is going to be a great chance to catch up.

Part 5 - Example role-play

A) Hey Tom. Did you hear what happened to Jed this week?
B) No. What happened?
A) Well, apparently he got caught using the office phone for personal calls and the boss made him pay for all the calls he made.
B) Wow!
A) Yeah. He should have just used his cellphone. If he had used his cellphone he probably wouldn’t have gotten caught.
B) Yeah. Or he could have used Skype - It’s free. Even if he got caught, he wouldn’t have to pay for the calls.
A) That’s a good point.
B) Also, I heard something happened with Tim.
A) Really? What?
B) He accidentally deleted a file Sam was working on, and Sam forced him to retype the whole thing.
A) Wow! That’s unfortunate. But it could easily have been avoided.
B) Yeah. He should have saved it more regularly.
A) Or he could have used Google Docs. If he had used Google Docs, he wouldn’t have had to worry about saving it because
it does so automatically.
